Toss & Context

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to field — a straightforward decision on a surface that had been under covers for a while before the start. Both sides were already eliminated from Super Eight contention, but this was about pride, form, and finishing with dignity. For Australia especially, after shock losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, the pressure was firmly on to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Oman Batting: Bowled Out for 104 in 16.2 Overs

Oman's innings never got going. Xavier Bartlett struck first ball, rattling Aamir Kaleem's stumps as the left-hander tried to heave and was undone by sharp inward movement.   It was a sign of things to come.

Adam Zampa, who had gone wicketless in back-to-back T20Is against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, got back to his best and picked up 4 for 21. Xavier Bartlett and Glenn Maxwell chipped in with two wickets apiece, bowling Oman out for 104 in 16.2 overs.  

Wasim Ali was Oman's top scorer with 32 off 33 balls, hitting four boundaries, but was eventually clean bowled by Maxwell. Hammad Mirza contributed 16 off 13, while Jatinder Singh managed 17 off 15 before being dismissed by Bartlett.  

Maxwell also picked up a key wicket when he dismissed Ramanandi, the batter trapped right in front for his 50th T20I wicket — a milestone in an otherwise difficult tournament for the veteran.

The target of 105 was never going to trouble Australia, and Mitchell Marsh made sure of that from the very first ball. Marsh and Head added 93 off 49 balls for the opening wicket. Marsh smashed an unbeaten 64 off 33 balls, while Head finished with 32 off 19. Australia chased down the target in 9.4 overs. 

Marsh's knock included 7 fours and 4 sixes, and his blazing innings equalled the record for the fastest chase of a 100+ target in T20 World Cup history.  

Josh Inglis hit the winning run, but there was hardly any celebration in the Australian camp. The result meant little to the overall context of the tournament, with Australia already out of the Super Eight running.

After a difficult campaign with the ball — going wicketless in two successive games — Zampa reminded everyone why he remains Australia's premier T20 spinner. His 4/21 dismantled Oman's middle order and helped bundle them out well inside 17 overs.

Australia's ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign was marred by injuries and the exclusion of players like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc. After beating Ireland in their opener, the Mitchell Marsh-led side succumbed to back-to-back defeats against Zimbabwe and co-hosts Sri Lanka, leading to a premature exit from the tournament.  

For the first time since 2009, Australia were knocked out at the group stage.  This win over Oman offered a small slice of consolation, but the bigger questions around squad selection and player form will linger heading into future tournaments.
